Hosting a refugee family
We have learnt a lot about the process of hosting a refugee family in the past few months. The bureaucracy can be horrendous and there may be significant financial implications. If you are thinking of hosting, or know of anyone who is, these are some things to bear in mind.
- Dealing with bureacracy is time consuming and complicated. The authorities are snowed under. Patience is essential.
- There are significant financial implications involved.
- Apply for an NI number and for Universal Credit as soon as they arrive. UC cannot be backdated.
- The West Sussex Resettlement Team need to be aware of their planned arrival then have their arrival confirmed.
- West Sussex supply a pre-paid £200 card but this takes several weeks to arrive, then has to be activated.
- West Sussex can provide £150 clothing vouchers and £210 food vouchers.
- The Red Cross provides a £50pp voucher within 14 days of arrival: 08081963651
- Sorting out a bank account is a priority so that benefits can be paid in.
- It is important to get a sim cards for phones as soon as possible. Some charities are giving them.
- Converter adaptors for electric plugs will be needed.
- Assume they will not have many belongings with them. A welcome pack of essentials is needed. Slippers are very important. Take them to a variety of shops before spending money, so they can see what’s available. Don’t assume they will use Primark or Charity Shops.
- They can feel like they are a burden; they want to be independent and stand on their own two feet.
- Help them connect with other families but avoid direct introductions – allow them to choose e.g. at language class.
- Get a CV done as soon as possible and apply to agencies for work.
- Apply for schools, via in year applications to West Sussex C.C.
- Register with the local GP
- Free English language courses are available at the Horsham Hub. Google Translate is invaluable.
- West Sussex CC offer free bus passes available to all Ukrainians for three months. They apply to only one bus company – you have to choose which one.
- The family need space and time. They may not want to talk about their experiences.
- If you need further information please email moc.liamg@pleheegufergninyets and we will try to help.
